Sports at Gorseybrigg


Welcome to a new year of sporting opportunities at Gorseybrigg Primary School!


Congratulations to Brooke and Isla  who were successful in their trial for the North East Derbyshire girls’ football team! Good luck in the tournament.

Year 1 children enjoyed an action packed morning of multi-skilled activities alongside children from William Levick and Unstone. Thank you to the students from Henry Fanshaw and well done to all the children for their excellent behaviour.

Congratulations to the 5 children who were selected for the North East Derbyshire Shooting Stars programme. Isla, Brooke, Emmie, Scarlett and Harvey demonstrated exceptional skills and will have lots of extra opportunities to develop themselves and inspire them on their sporting journey. Their first trip will be to Manchester Velodrome in December.We are very proud of you!

On the 2nd October some year 5 and year 6 girls attended a mini-soccer festival at Henry Fanshaw. The girls had a fun time improving their football skills and showed excellent teamwork.


Recent Events:

  • 12th July – Year 2 and Year 4 children had the opportunity to attend the English Institute of Sport with other children from across North East Derbyshire.  This was a new event organised by the School Sport Partnership.  All the children had an amazing, action packed experience!
  • 6th July – Year 3’s attended a Summer Festival at St Andrew's Primary School alongside 2 other schools. Thank you to the Young Leaders from Henry Fanshawe for another fantastic and well organised event.
  • In June we have had our Infant and Nursery Sports Days. Both events consisted of non-competitive activities followed by competitive races. Stickers for all keeps everyone happy! Junior Sports day is a more traditional, competitive event. With our 3 houses competing against each other to win the coveted trophy! Well done to this year’s winners - Lucas.
  • Derbyshire Cricket club have delivered 3 sessions to Years 1 and 2, working alongside class teachers. This helped children to develop their ball skills in a fun environment.6th May -Years 1, 2 and 3 took part in a mass participation Fun to Run event at Mount St Mary’s. We were lucky with the weather in a week of rain and all the children had a fun morning.On Thursday 25th May, three teams from Years 5 and 6 represented our school in a day’s long cricket competition. All the children played really well and had a great day.

  • The week of 22nd May was our annual sports week. The week started off with an opening ceremony where Year 1 performed their Dinosaur Dance and Year 5 sang their ‘Going for Gold’ song. There followed an action packed timetable of a wide variety of sports. Thank you to the following clubs/leaders for providing extra support with taster sessions: Ruggereds, Derbyshire Cricket club, MPM Tennis, Abbeydale Tennis club, Dronfield Sports Centre, Louise Rodgers - Netball, Mark Shaw – Gymnastics, Alison Tingay –Orienteering, and Dancedaze. If anyone would like further information about any of these clubs, please contact school.        Well done to the Bronze Ambassadors, Year 5s and Year 6s for taking on a leadership role; planning and delivering activities to the younger children with great leadership skills.        
  • Reception and Year 1 took part in Scooter Smart training, provided by Derbyshire County Council.                 
  • Years 1 to 6 also took part in a range of intra-competitions, representing countries from around the world.      
  • Sports week also saw our annual school walk to Barlow. Another enjoyable day.                                              
  • The week was finished off with a closing ceremony where sporting certificates were presented.
  • On Monday 22nd May 12 children from Years 5 and 6 took part in a Quad Kids competition at Henry Fanshawe School. All children performed really well, great work!
  • Derbyshire cricket club came into school to run a pre-match session with Year 6.
  • Well done to our Year 4 mini tennis team who came a fantastic 2nd place in the District final at Eckington.
